The Denver Post reported the landowner's plan to replace south Denver's last drive-in with an apartment complex. The city council approved the plan. The Denver-based drag queen troupe known as the Demented Divas played fairy godmother and took on the fight to save the local drive-in. The burly belles performed a version of Cinderella on the roof of the Cinderella Twin's concession stand to raise awareness and protest the demolition. "We are very sad at the imminent destruction of one of the few remaining drive-in movie theaters in the country," said Jim Goble, manager of the drive-in. "A part of Denver's culture is going away."

Record crowds gathered to savor the final nights at the Cinderella Twin. Teenagers cruised; couples cuddled; parents brought blankets, lawn chairs, and a longing to share this experience with their kids. Car radios were tuned to the sound of the movie because the speakers were already gone. No one noticed the deep rumbling of the heavily loaded train going by.

I had to record this closing. Jim gave me full access and enthusiastic support. I used DSLRs and lenses ranging from 17 to 300mm. I spotted and cropped the images as needed in Photoshop. I created "The Link" homage to O. Winston Link's iconic 1956 image, "Hot Shot Eastbound," by combining elements from five separate images.

Ten months later all that remains of the Cinderella Twin is the marquee.
